Awesome ancient sites off the beaten path 


Most travelers sweep through Chichen Itza when exploring the Mayan Empire's greatest ruins. Enjoy the less-traveled route through Palenque, in northern Chiapas, where you can lose yourself in the largely unexcavated ruins of roughly 500 buildings. Most of the hieroglyph-covered temples were erected between the seventh and tenth centuries A.D. The buildings, which are surrounded by the encroaching jungle, have complex engravings, sculptures of kings and warriors and even carvings of cosmic creatures.At sunrise every morning, crowds gather before Angkor Wat, the jewel of the fallen Khmer empire. Everywhere, are shutter-happy tourists, saffron robe-draped monks and Cambodian children hawking souvenirs.
