Tourism is taking off, and the Scandinavian countries are having to invest in neglected infrastructure for the travel industry. They are handicapped by high prices in service industries, notably in the hotel and catering sectors, but English is widely spoken. However, tourism still accounts for only a small portion of gross domestic product compared to the substantial contribution in cheaper, warmer countries further south.
